CAPE TOWN - Alleged underworld gang boss Nafiz Modack has blamed a former associate for instructing co-accused Zane Kilian to ping slain top cop Charl Kinnear excessively.

Modack, Kilian and 13 others face 122 charges for various crimes including the murder of Kinnear.

Kilian recently testified he only pinged on instruction from Modack who hired him for debt collection.

Evidence shows Kilian pinged Kinnear more than 2000 times before his murder in September 2020.

He told the court he pinged Kinnear only on instruction from Modack - who he was introduced to through a mutual associate Renier van der Vyver.

Kilian admitted he often received requests to ping Kinnear from Van der Vyver believing it was on behalf of Modack.

Kilian told the court he believed he was also receiving WhatsApp messages - which came from various cellphone numbers - to ping Kinnear from Modack.

Modack's lawyer, Advocate Bashier Sibda, put it to Kilian that the instructions to ping Kinnear excessively came from Van der Vyver and had nothing to do with Modack.

Sibda told the court Modack admits to asking Kilian to ping Kinnear along with alleged underworld gang boss Jerome "Donkie" Booyse - and eight other high-ranking police officers because he feared they wanted him dead but he never instructed him to ping excessively.
