JOHANENSBURG - The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Gauteng has expressed outrage following a revelation by the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) that 57 officers face rape and corruption charges in the province.
According to IPID’s annual report, the province recorded 20 cases of rape committed by officers, with six of incidents having happened while officers were on duty.
The province also topped the list for corruption cases nationwide.
The party’s Crezane Bosch said Premier Panyaza Lesufi should engage the provincial commissioner to take action against the implicated officers.
“Under Premier Panyaza Lesufi's leadership both criminals and corrupt officers roam freely eroding public trust. The DA Gauteng demands urgent action from the premier and law enforcement leaders. Business as usual cannot continue. Those who break the law in uniform or not must be held accountable.”
