The drivers were shot dead while on duty on Monday night, one in Protea Glen and the other in Mapetla.
In the first incident, a passenger who witnessed the attack took cover before attempting to drive the bus but crashed into a wall.
The City of Joburg has suspended all Rea Vaya bus operations until further notice and is discussing measures to improve security with law enforcement, the taxi industry and other stakeholders.
City spokesperson, Virgil James: "Dada Morero, together with his mayoral committee and city manager, have expressed their shock and dismay at the senseless killing of two Rea Vaya bus drivers and expressed their deepest condolences to their family and friends."
