CAPE TOWN - The Cape of Good Hope SPCA has uncovered yet another dogfighting ring, this time in Eerste River.

It's their second major breakthrough in just five days.

SPCA officials and law enforcement officers conducted a raid in Ottery last week where they seized five dogs.

Two of them had freshly cropped ears, an offence in terms of the Animals Protection Act.

Officers raided two properties in Eerste River on Monday, where they found seven dogs living in horrific conditions and a collapsed dogfighting pit, stained with blood, grim evidence of the brutal organised fights that had taken place there.

The dogs were attached to heavy chains and deprived of water.

One suspect was arrested during the operation.

Meanwhile, two people were arrested in connection with last week's raid in Ottery and have since been released on bail.

At that scene, inspectors discovered a blood-soaked carpet, the walls of a makeshift dogfighting pit smeared with blood stains and equipment linked to dogfighting, including a treadmill and medication.

The animal welfare organisation said that further arrests were imminent.
