Alexandra was founded in the same year the ANC was - 1912.
However, a long-time resident, Sam Sanyane, said the township's population had far outstripped its development.
"I am old and dying now but I still have not seen much development in the 30 years [of democracy] that ANC has governed here. I love the ANC, I was born and bred in it, but it’s embarrassing me."
Another local, Ethel Mngomezulu, said she attended the rally in the hopes of getting the ANC leadership to act on the long-standing issue of title deeds in Alexandra.
"They want us to pay for services without our title deeds. We need our title deeds, we need the Premier to talk to CoJ [City of Johannesburg] to bring back our title deeds. I’m very much disappointed."
Meanwhile, ANC Gauteng chairperson Panyaza Lesufi apologised to Alexandra residents, promising to improve service delivery soon.
