JOHANNESBURG - A man and woman in Soweto have been arrested for staging a fake kidnapping.

According to police, the 23-year-old woman was reported missing in Randburg last week and a ransom demand was made to her family.

A multidisciplinary team, including various units of law enforcement then tracked the suspects down at a house in Moroka, where the woman was allegedly being held captive.

Police said that further investigations revealed that the woman and her accomplice had organised the fake kidnapping.

Police spokesperson Amanda van Wyk said that both suspects face charges of kidnapping and defeating the ends of justice.

"The operation led the team to an identified address in Moroka where both the supposed victim and her alleged kidnapper were found. Further investigations revealed that the kidnapping had been staged by the woman and the kidnapper. Both were subsequently arrested. The investigation remains ongoing."
