CAPE TOWN - Western Cape Education MEC David Maynier says improving access to education in the province is a priority for him.
He was speaking at the National Senior Certificate Awards ceremony on Thursday.
After acknowledging the prestigious achievements of the 2024 matric class, he focused on the learners who were still in the schooling system.
He promised to expand access to education, improving school performance and improving learning outcomes.
"Well, we have launched a programme called the Rapid School Build Programme where we are building more schools faster than ever before, serving learners in poor communities. We must still finalise our infrastructure plans for the next five years."
He added that the new schools would relieve the pressure of finding space for all learners.
"Our big challenge is what we call extremely late applications, and these are learners who are applying after the 1st of January 2025 so there are learners that still do not have a place at school, but we are working with districts and schools and parents to ensure that every learner has a place here in the Western Cape."
