JOHANNESBURG - The North West led the pack for the most arrests by the Hawks between October and December 2024.
Close to 1,000 people were arrested in the province.
Hawks head Godfrey Lebeya made the announcement during a briefing on Friday afternoon while delivering their third quarterly stats.
In the last three months of 2024, the North West saw a massive increase in arrests by the Hawks.
"Most of the arrests were effected in North West province with 919, Gauteng province with 116, KwaZulu-Natal province with 106, Mpumalanga province with 67 and Western Cape province with 57 suspects."
He said this was mainly due to the number of illegal miners arrested.
"The North West figure is incorporating the 854 illegal mining cases that were allocated to the DPCI from Operation Vala Umgodi at Stilfontein."
Close to 1,500 people were arrested by the Hawks in the third quarter.
