CAPE TOWN - Western Cape Premier Alan Winde says now that the probe launched by the province into the cause of the George building collapse has been finalised, he hopes other entities will follow suit soon.
In May 2024, provincial government appointed an independent structural engineering firm to investigate what caused a five-storey building to cave in on 6 May, killing 34 people.
On Thursday, the premier handed over the engineering firm's report to senior police officials in the province.
Winde said he hopes the report's findings can help the police in their own probe.
He also thanked the engineering team for its work over the past eight months.
"Thinking back to that fateful day, those days that followed, I think of Gabriel Gwambe who 100 hours after a collapsed building, gets pulled out and rescued. What a miracle. I think about each and every one of those people that were pulled out of that building, and that makes me think of the rescuers, the firefighters, the paramedics, the volunteers, the citizens who were there to support."
