JOHANNESBURG -The World Food Programme (WFP) says several of its warehouses in Goma have been looted recently in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

The M23 rebel group has been in combat with the allied democratic forces since December 2023.

On Thursday during a media briefing, the WFP noted that the escalating conflict has caused people to go with little to no food supply.

Deputy Director of WFP, Cynthia Jones said people in Goma have been pushed into a desperate situation to feed themselves.

"The desperate times calls for desperate measures and the civilian population will turn to drastic means to find food. So we have seen widespread looting, including food stores in Goma. Several of our warehouses have been looted."

Meanwhile, the WFP said it aims to resume its operations in the eastern DRC as soon as it is safe to do so.

Jones said they need all parties involved in the conflict to guarantee safe access to humanitarian aid.

"I can't stress enough how important it is that all parties to the conflict cease hostilities and uphold their obligations under international humanitarian law, including for the protection and safety of humanitarian workers, safe humanitarian corridors must be opened to ensure the delivery of humanitarian aid, including emergency food assistance and the free movement of civilians fleeing the fighting."
