JOHANNESBURG - The City of Ekurhuleni will host a media briefing on Monday to address the issue of the Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department (EMPD) being unable to issue fines.

This follows an exclusive report by EWN on Friday morning.

Since October, the EMPD has been unable to issue, process or capture fines.

The City of Ekurhuleni has failed to respond as to why measures were not adequately implemented in time to allow traffic officers to continue issuing fines.

This follows the expiration of a contract with road safety and fine management service provider, Syntell, on 30 September last year.

The Syntell contract initially expired in June and was extended for a further three months.

In an internal email, the city outlined plans to internalise the process of law enforcement with an Integrated Law Enforcement Management System (ILEMS).

The system was meant to have gone live on 11 January but this never materialised.

Syntell was contracted to deal with the capturing and processing of fines, warrants and summons as well as providing the technology for automatic number plate recognition.

But despite this, EMPD officers continue to stop motorists for traffic law infringements, knowing well that they cannot issue fines.

The city said it would brief the media on Monday about the issue.
