DURBAN - KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi has confirmed that one of the two suspects killed by police on Thursday afternoon was a member of the notorious West Gang.

Two suspects were killed during a shootout with police in the Indwedwe area on Thursday afternoon.

Police said the suspects were wanted for a string of murder cases, amongst other criminal cases.

The group has been terrorising communities north of Durban, especially the Inanda area for years now.

Police are combing the crime scene of yet another deadly shooting involving police officers and suspected criminals.

An intelligence-led operation led police to the suspects' location.

Police said that after changing cars several times, the suspects were finally intercepted but a shootout ensued.

Provincial police commissioner, Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi: "It's a group that's been wanted for some time. I'm sure you know that there’s always been talks about West Gang of Inanda, although this area is not necessarily Inanda, but the two up there, one of them is a leader of that gang, a youngster, a 22-year-old."

He said that the 22-year-old gang leader had been linked to more than 10 killings.

"There’s been a number of murder cases there he has been involved with, at least not less than 10 murders on his name - attempted murders, robberies and so forth."
