CAPE TOWN - Teams from the Gift of the Givers have been deployed to the Taiwan informal settlement in Khayelitsha, where a fire has destroyed several homes.
The blaze broke out on Wednesday.
Members of the humanitarian aid organisation were busy assisting fire victims in the same vicinity when Taiwan residents frantically called for help.
Meanwhile, the City’s Disaster Risk Management Centre activated a Joint Operations Centre to oversee response and recovery efforts.
City Disaster Risk Management spokesperson Charlotte Powell said: “Our assessments are concluded to determine the exact extent and impact of the fire.
"The results of the assessments have been forwarded to SASSA [South African Social Security Agency] and the national Department of Human Settlements for further revision of relief. The Disaster Risk Management Centre will also activate city services to help clear the fire site and restore any municipal services that might have been impacted.”
