JOHANNESBURG - Legal counsel for the SABC Advocate Terry Motau has denied that the public broadcaster is in breach of the editorial code.

This came after Advocate Dali Mpofu argued that the SABC has misused its editorial authority by using the term ‘Government of National Unity’ (GNU).

Mpofu, who represents former president Jacob Zuma and the uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party, accused the organisation of taking a political stance with the continued use of the term.

On Monday, the Gauteng High Court in Johannesburg heard the former president’s legal challenge against the SABC over the use of the term.

Judgment was reserved in the matter.

The SABC has argued that the addition of an explainer when using GNU as a term may be construed as taking a side.

This came after Mpofu submitted that the public broadcaster was mimicking the utterances of government when referring to the GNU.

However, Motau told the court that this does not represent an endorsement.
