CAPE TOWN - The Democratic Alliance (DA) is calling on the police to employ more staff at its 10111 command centre in Maitland.

According to the latest statistics, the call centre had an increase in dropped or abandoned calls between December and the first week of January.

The party’s Nicholas Gotsell said it was concerning that many calls were not being answered.

"We did look at the amount of I think they call it dropped calls and that is also quite high, but they did explain to me that you know, its dropped because they couldn't answer it, it's dropped because you know people put the phone down or they run out of airtime or whatever the story."

He added that Western Cape police management must urgently employ more staff at the command centre.

"At first glance, the centre operates quite well but when we looked at the stats, the fact that there are only 8 staff members per shift taking a very high number of calls that is quite concerning."

Nicholas also expressed his concerns with the number of dropped calls at the command centre.
