Lester Kiewit interviews Neil Robinson, CEO of the Pedal Power Association.

Listen below.

On Saturday morning, a tragic incident occurred on the main road in St James when a cyclist was struck and killed.

Witnesses report that the cyclist was knocked off his bike after colliding with an open car door, causing him to fall into the road, where a passing truck then hit him.

This accident has sparked renewed calls for motorists to be more vigilant, especially when opening car doors on busy roads.

"It's a behaviour change; we need to change our habits when driving."
- Neil Robinson, CEO – Pedal Power Association

Robinson highlights the upcoming Cape Town Cycle Tour, which will see more cyclists on the roads in preparation.

While there’s no quick solution to the problem, he urges cyclists to choose quieter routes for training, avoid busier areas when possible, and adhere to designated cycle lanes for added safety.

Additionally, Robinson stresses that the association does not condone riding in large groups, such as four or five cyclists abreast, on public roads.

"If you looking at a car or a truck versus a cyclist or a pedestrian, you know who's going to win."
