Since its inception in 2019, the annual Cape Flats Book Festival in Mitchells Plain is drawing more and more people from surrounding areas.

The community has really caught on to it, and every year the line-up keeps getting better, says Read to Rise co-founder Roscoe Williams.

The 2025 edition, taking place on 1 and 2 February, includes local luminaries like Zubeida Jaffer, Tracy Going and Barbara Boswell.

Panel discussions, writing workshops and readings are just some of the items on the programme.

Promoting literacy is one of the prime motivators for the free Festival, which includes events for children.

"This was an intentional decision - our kids are struggling in the community so we have sessions there specifically for children and specifically for adults. It caters for the entire family."
"This is more than just a book or literacy festival; it's about bringing people together from different walks of life... This is is how we change the lives of people, slowly; and that's our vision."
Roscoe Williams, Co-founder - Read to Rise

The Cape Flats Book Festival takes place at the West End Primary School in Mitchells Plain on Saturday and Sunday the first and second of February.

Attendance is on a first-come first-served basis, so arrive early if there's a session you really don't want to miss, says Williams.
