JOHANNESBURG - The African National Congress National (ANC) Executive Committee (NEC) is holding day two of its three-day annual lekgotla taking place at Emperor's Palace in Kempton Park.
This is the party’s second one since the formation of the Government of National Unity (GNU).
ANC's Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula on Saturday addressed the media and defended President Cyril Ramaphosa’s decision to enact the Expropriation Act.
This after the Democratic Alliance (DA) slammed the president for making unilateral decisions and claiming the party was being used as a vehicle to implement the ANC’s policies in the GNU.
Mbalula said that the Expropriation Act, signed into law on Thursday, provided a legal framework to address historical injustices.
The bill repeals the pre-democratic Expropriation Act of 1975.
The ANC's Mbalula said the act enabled the expropriation of land in the public interest, including for land reform and socio-economic development.
"Government must prioritise the implementation of the act to unlock opportunities in agriculture, human settlements and industrial development. The president noted that land reform is essential not only for justice but also for economic growth and national food security."
He said those who disagree with the bill could take the matter to court.
