ANCYL threatens to shut down mines if retrenchments go ahead

JOHANNESBURG - The African National Congress Youth League (ANCYL) has threatened to shut down all mines in the country if retrenchments in the sector are not stopped.  

The ANCYL, along with the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) youth structure held a picket outside the Minerals Council of South Africa in Rosebank, Johannesburg on Friday. 

The picket was held to demonstrate against the impeding retrenchments in the sector with a number of mining companies having announced they plan on cutting their work staff.

ANCYL president, Collen Malatji said for many years, mining companies only benefitted the wealthy. 
 
"The youth of this country gave us a mandate that they want economic freedom now and not later. We are no longer saying it's the future. We are saying we want it now. And we are saying that if that does not happen, there's no mine here who will operate in the future. We call upon all our youth in all corners of this country. We're going to wake up and close all the gates of the mines if they can't explain who the mines benefit."
