JOHANNESBURG - ActionSA in Gauteng is sounding the alarm on what it calls the province's crippling traffic congestion.
It's now calling on provincial and municipal governments to take immediate action.
Earlier in January, the party conducted oversight inspections on major provincial and municipal roads in Johannesburg which the party said had revealed shocking levels of traffic congestion caused by malfunctioning traffic lights.
According to the party, residents spend more than 37 minutes daily in traffic due to congestion, resulting in an estimated R26,000 per person annually.
The inspections, conducted by ActionSA MPL Emma More and Joburg Councillor Sello Mabelebel, found that out of six traffic lights on the route from Randpark Ridge to North Riding Square, only one was working.
The party also highlighted that on some municipal roads such as Boundary Road and Aureole Avenue, the traffic lights have been out of order for three years.
"This situation has escalated to the point where concerned citizens are taking it upon themselves to guide traffic and ensure smooth flow in the absence of provincial and municipal traffic officers," said the party's Emma More.
She said that the party would hold both provincial and municipal governments accountable for their role in addressing the crisis.
"We will ensure that municipalities and departments of road and transport collaborate effectively to resolve and address this critical issue."
