JOHANNESBURG - A KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) crime watch fighting volunteer group says the provincial government has no interest in fighting crime.

The claims come after it accused the KZN government of reneging on its promise to donate a fleet of vehicles to the group.

Former KZN premier Nomusa Dube-Ncube signed an agreement at a public event, promising to donate the vehicles to the eThekwini Neighbourhood watch group.

However, the group only received two vehicles.

The eThekwini Neighbourhood Watch consists of 4,500 members who say they put their lives on the line to fight crime in their communities.

The movement said they were encouraged to do more when they learned they would get 36 cars with R1,000 petrol monthly.

But the promises were never fulfilled.

The neighbourhood watch's Andile Mngeyane said this is a breach of the contract.

"We have given government a lot of tangible and workable solutions that this can actually decrease the crime in the neighbourhood and our communities but nothing is being done which begs the question, who is being protected is it the communities or the criminals."

Mngeyane said to date, the provincial government has not come to address their concerns.
