Soweto taxi operations: Law enforcement keeping watchful eye - GP Transpot MEC

This comes after the Gauteng Provincial Regulatory Entity officially awarded the Nancefield-Dube West Taxi Association the right to operate on routes that have been the centre of a long-standing dispute with the Witwatersrand African Taxi Association.

JOHANNESBURG - Gauteng Roads and Transport MEC Kedibone Diale-Tlabela says the department is working with law enforcement to ensure minibus taxi operations are safe in Soweto.

This comes after the Gauteng Provincial Regulatory Entity (GPRE) officially awarded the Nancefield-D ube West Taxi Association (NANDUWE) the right to operate on routes that have been the centre of a long-standing dispute with the Witwatersrand African Taxi Association (WATA).

Diale-Tlabela thanked the national, provincial and regional structures of the Gauteng National Taxi Alliance (GNTA) and South African Taxi Council (SANTACO) who participated and accepted the decision. 
  
She said that the department is committed to working with the industry to find lasting solutions to all challenges in the tax industry. 
  
"We as a Department of Roads and Transport are calling for calm from all parties to avoid the possible violent clashes, between the affected parties and we are assuring the public that as the State, as government we are going to do everything in our powers to ensure security and safety of all the affected people in the area," said the Gauteng Transport Department's spokesperson, Lesiba Mpya.
