CAPE TOWN - Defence attorneys for eight of the 14 accused in the trial against underworld gang boss, Nafiz Modack, on Wednesday tried to cast doubt on the testimony of the State's main witness.

Modack and his co-accused face 122 charges for various crimes allegedly related to operating a criminal enterprise.

On Wednesday, defence attorneys submitted applications to have the charges against their clients withdrawn.

Nafiz Modack's co-accused are following in his footsteps by submitting applications to have the charges they face withdrawn.

Defence attorneys for eight of the accused put a spotlight on the testimony of a self-confessed gunman, serving a sentence at Pollsmoor Prison.

The State witness, who can only be referred to as "Mr A", testified that Modack and the eight accused were complicit in the charges they face.

The attorneys told the court that Mr A's testimony lacked credibility because he lied under oath.

The defence submitted that his testimony contradicted the testimonies of other sSate witnesses who have taken the stand.

The trial continues.
