DURBAN - The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Public Works and Infrastructure says it's started implementing cost-cutting measures to save public funds.
This comes as the provincial government faces a financial crunch, with a deficit peaking at R9 billion.
The department says through its strict measures, it's been able to pay some unpaid contractors.
KZN MEC for Public Works and Infrastructure, Martin Meyer, briefed the media in Durban on Tuesday.

"Through stringent financial measures we were able to make savings, coupled with soliciting payments owed to us, last year we successfully paid out R500 million to contractors, some who have been waiting for months and even years for work done. This ensured that they were able to save their assets and businesses.
He added that some internal changes are needed to cut costs.
"The department has successfully revised its policy on cellphone and data usage. Previously, monthly expenditures exceeded R670,000 per month, of which R192,000 constituted irregular, fruitless and wasteful expenditure," said Meyer.
