Family of slain Rand Water executive Teboho Joala: Who ordered the hit?

Joala and his bodyguard, Sifiso Shange, were killed – almost a year ago – in front of 70 primary school learners at Zakariyya Park, south of Joburg, during a back-to-school campaign.

JOHANNESBURG - The family of slain Rand Water executive Teboho Joala says questions still linger over who called for the father of two to be killed.

On Monday, three men charged with the murder of Joala and his bodyguard, Sifiso Shange, appeared in the Lenasia Magistrates Court.

Shange and Joala were killed – almost a year ago – in front of 70 primary school learners at Zakariyya Park, south of Joburg, during a back-to-school campaign.

Joala’s family is pleased that one of the three men arrested for his murder was denied bail.

On Monday, 35-year-old taxi owner Lindani Mtshali applied for bail but was denied.

In his founding affidavit, Mtshali, a member of the Benoni Taxi Association, claims to earn an income of R80,000 a month from the 12 taxis he owns.

His assets, including livestock from KwaNongoma, where he is originally from, amount to almost R200,000.

But Joala’s older brother, Ntsane, says there are still questions about who ordered the hit.

“Those guys in court, obviously, they don’t know. I’m definitely sure they were given a name, a picture, an address, or information - but they were doing somebody’s work. There is somebody behind this.”

The case has been postponed to February for a trial date.
