JOHANNESBURG - The eThekwini Neighbourhood Watch says it's disappointed that the provincial government did not uphold its promise to supply them with vehicles.

According to the group, former KwaZulu-Natal Premier Nomusa Dube-Ncube promised that 36 vehicles would be handed over.

However, the group said they only received two and were told to wait for the rest.

The eThekwini Neighbourhood Watch was established in 2022 to help with curbing crime in areas like KwaMashu and Inanda.

Members of the group said they put their lives on the line daily, to protect their communities and this without any equipment.

In 2024, the KZN Premier’s office hosted the group and other similar organisations to show recognition for their efforts.

It committed to providing the groups with the tools they needed.

However, the neighbourhood watch only received two of the 36 vehicles promised.

The neighbourhood watch's Andile Mngeyane said they were disappointed that the promise of the 36 vehicles was not upheld.

"We only received two and it shocked us a lot that now after elections we found that the vehicles that have been promised to us with the aid of fighting crime, fighting this pandemic have now been resourced to SAPS [South African Police Service], which is a government entity that has its own budget."

The KZN provincial government has confirmed that the 34 vehicles were since redeployed to SAPS.
