DURBAN - The Public Works and Infrastructure Department in KwaZulu-Natal says it plans to recover all the money stolen from the department.

The department has lost billions as a result of allegations of corruption implicating some of its now-axed officials.

This was also confirmed after 10 forensic investigations under the instruction of MEC, Martin Meyer.

Meyer said they were aiming to recover the stolen money once police investigations were concluded.

"Recouping the money is tied to the criminal investigations that is being done by the Hawks, so once the Hawks have concluded it, through our colleague at the NPA, we will then definitely see if there’s any chance of us to recouping any of the money and we would love to do that."

Meyer added that the theft of the funds had hindered the delivery of services.

"This money was not stolen from the air, it was stolen from the poorest of the poor and the most vulnerable people of KwaZulu-Natal, who we are not unable to deliver services to."
