GP Transport Dept calls for calm between rival taxi associations following decision on routes

JOHANNESBURG - The Gauteng Department of Roads and Transport is calling for calm between two rival taxi associations following a decision on taxi routes.
The latest decision allows one of the associations to operate on routes that have been at the centre of a long-standing dispute.
Gauteng Provincial Regulatory Entity (GPRE) has officially given the Nancefield-Dube West Taxi Association (NANDUWE) the right to operate on routes that have been a source of conflict with Witwatersrand African Taxi Association (WATA) in Soweto and surrounding areas.

The conflict, which has been ongoing for more than a decade, has seen violent clashes between rival associations.
Gauteng Transport Department spokesperson, Lesiba Mpya, said NANDUWE would now be able to operate on the following routes.
"The routes include the Mofolo - KwaMthethwa informal taxi rank to Jeppe station taxi rank, the Dube station taxi rank to Jeppe station taxi rank, the Makhetha garage in Phefeni to Jeppe station taxi rank, as well as the Uncle Tom's Hall taxi rank to Jeppe taxi rank."
