CAPE TOWN - Western Cape police said that efforts to remove illegal firearms from the streets of the Cape were gaining momentum.

Three suspects were arrested in separate incidents for illegal gun possession on Tuesday.

In the first incident, police attending to an active burglary scene in Wellington nabbed two suspects who they found in possession of a handgun.

Police spokesperson, Joseph Swaartbooi, said that officers also arrested a 32-year-old suspect in Vredenburg.

"Public order police members deployed in Vredenburg to quell the current gang violence in the area conducted disruptive stop and search operations in Middelpos informal settlement. They tactically entered an identified dwelling and searched the occupants and the entire premises which resulted in the recovery and confiscation of an assortment of ammunition."

Meanwhile, a suspected lobster smuggler has found himself behind bars after he was found in possession of 57 lobsters and more than 800 lobster tails in Macassar.

"The 28-year-old man could not provide a valid permit to be in possession of the mentioned goods and was detained for the unlawful possession of rock lobsters."
