JOHANNESBURG - City Power has recovered illegal and stolen cables worth an estimated R500,000 during a cut-off operation in Princess informal settlement on the West Rand.

The operation is aimed at stabilising City’s Power grid and ensuring a reliable supply for paying customers.

It saw dozens of technicians working alongside law enforcement officers.

Hundreds of metres of cables, including stolen ones, were disconnected from City Power’s infrastructure, loaded onto trucks, and confiscated.

City Power spokesperson, Isaac Mangena, described the operation as a success.

"This is one of those areas where we are taking the fight back to the community, to ensure that we deal with these issues. We will continue to do similar operations in other areas across the city."

Mangena said that illegal connections in informal settlements put enormous pressure on the system.

He added, however, that no arrests had been made yet.
