CAPE TOWN - Western Cape police have described the neighbourhood watch member who was shot and killed in Makhaza as selfless and committed to safeguarding his community. 

The 51-year-old was murdered while patrolling the informal settlement, in Khayelitsha over the weekend.

The victim was part of a patrol at Ezimfeneni in the Nkanini informal settlement on Saturday night. 

According to police, the neighbourhood watch member was shot, suffering injuries to his shoulder and leg, and died at the scene.

Police have confirmed that a murder case has been opened, and efforts to arrest the assailants are ongoing.
