CAPE TOWN - The City of Cape Town says wheels are in motion for its traffic and law enforcement services to be fully amalgamated within the next four years.

Mayco member for safety and security, JP Smith, said that the city was in the consultation and engagement phase with staff and unions to launch the project this year.

"We do believe now that the risks that previously cause us in part to keep these resources and services separate have abated and that we can manage the risks that comes with the optimisation - that the benefits outweigh the challenges it creates."

Smith said that more than 1,000 officers were already being upskilled to perform both law enforcement and traffic services.

"The project doesn't actually cost any significant money to implement and in the long run will be a benefit for the public. The go-live is later this year in October and it will take about four years to fully realise."
