JOHANNESBURG - The African National Congress (ANC) is set to announce whether to disband or reconfigure its Gauteng and Kwazulu-Natal structures.

The party's national executive committee (NEC) met at the weekend to discuss the fate of the two provinces.

Both provinces performed poorly in the recent general elections after failing to clinch majorities in their respective regions.

The ANC said the discussions over the past two days have been robust but cordial.

It said whatever decision it makes, all members will be expected to respect and abide by it.

Speaking on the sidelines of the meeting on Sunday, ANC spokesperson Mahlengi Bhengu-Motsiri explained: "I'm sure you would have seen NEC members that may hold a different position travelling together, continuing the discussion even during lunch and I think that’s a healthy sign and indicative of an organisation that is really looking outward in terms of addressing the trust deficit that currently exists between the ANC and the people of South Africa.”

Bhengu-Motsiri said there are only two possible outcomes for the two provinces; disbandment or reconfiguration.  She said leaving them as they are is out of the question.
