JOHANNESBURG - Six provinces recorded increases in the number of fatalities on the roads during the festive season.
When compared to the previous year, KwaZulu-Natal, Eastern Cape, Free State, Limpopo, Northern Cape and North West lost more lives over the holiday season.
The Eastern Cape topped the list, recording 70 more fatalities than in the 2023/2024 period.
Meanwhile, Gauteng, Western Cape and Mpumalanga recorded decreases in the number of deaths on the roads.
Transport Minister Barbara Creecy released the road fatality statistics on Monday, where she announced an overall increase of 5.3% in fatalities.
This means 1,502 people died during the period under review.
Creecy said it was concerning that road users continued to disobey traffic laws with no regard for human life.
"To give you a sense of the appalling lack of respect for the traffic laws, I want to share a few important numbers which will help all of us to better understand the very serious problem we are dealing with. Our law enforcement officers issued 711,184 fines for various traffic offences across the country."
