The National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) says church congregants raised the alarm on Saturday after their attempts to save the 31-year-old man were unsuccessful.

CAPE TOWN - Search operations are ongoing for a man who was swept out to sea during a baptism ceremony at Beacon Bay in East London.

The National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) says church congregants raised the alarm on Saturday after their attempts to save the 31-year-old man were unsuccessful.

NSRI spokesperson Craig Lambinon says there have been no signs of the missing individual so far.

"Despite an extensive sea and shoreline search, there remains no signs of the missing man. Police divers are continuing in an ongoing search. Thoughts, care and compassion are with the family, friends and the church congregation, of the missing man in this difficult time."
