CAPE TOWN - Former member of parliament and ANC Western Cape member, Bruce Kannemeyer, has passed away at the age of 60.
Kannemeyer died at his home in Mossel Bay after a long battle with cancer.
He played a significant role in the transition from apartheid to a democratic government.
The ANC in the Western Cape is paying tribute to Kannemeyer for his significant contributions to the party's provincial structure.
Provincial spokesperson Buntu Gwija said that Kannemeyer’s insights and efforts will be greatly missed.
"So, he has provided a lot of insight into the current PEC, advising the provincial secretary in the province to date. We wish the family and friends condolences," said Gwija.
Kannemeyer, represented the ANC in the National Assembly from 1999 to 2004.
After resigning from Parliament, he joined local government and later served as the mayor of Stellenbosch municipality.
In 2006, Kannemeyer’s political career faced a setback when the Western Cape High Court convicted him and four other MP's for fraud in a travel voucher scandal.
He accepted a plea deal for theft related to R70,000 in unlawful claims and paid a fine of 40,000 rand.
Following the conviction, he expressed his hope that the public would judge him by his contributions rather than his past mistakes.
