JOHANNESBURG - The African National Congress (ANC) is set to make a decision on the future of its Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal executive committees.
Both provinces registered poor results in the 2024 general elections, losing their majorities in their respective regions.
The ANC’s National Executive Committee (NEC), which is the party’s highest decision-making body in between conferences, is meeting this weekend to finalise the future of its two provincial branches.
To disband or not to disband? That will be the question facing the party’s NEC.
The leaders of Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal have already appeared before the ANC NEC to explain their electoral performances.
At a recent rally, ANC KwaZulu-Natal secretary Bheki Mtolo said all ANC structures that lost their majority must be held accountable.
“The [ANC] National Executive Committee led by [President Cyril] Ramaphosa and [Fikile] Mbalula lost the country by dropping to 40%. They must take that responsibility. [Siboniso] Duma and I are taking responsibility for losing the province and dropping to 17%.”
Eyewitness News understands the ANC NEC is divided over the disbanding of these provinces and may resolve on a less harsh intervention.
