JOHANNESBURG - The Johannesburg municipal council has approved the ratification report formalising the appointment of Tshepo Makola as acting city manager.

Makola, who is the metro’s chief operating officer, will act as city manager for the next three months.

During this time, the city will begin the process of recruiting a candidate to permanently serve in the position.

The city manager seat was left vacant after the Johannesburg High Court ruled that Floyd Brink’s appointment to the position in 2023 was unlawful.

While the Democratic Alliance (DA) voted against Makola’s appointment, the regional leader in Joburg, Belinda Kayser-Echeozonjoku said she hopes he’ll stabilise service delivery.

"While we recognise Mr Makola’s qualifications, experience and the fact that he is the city’s current COO, he steps into a role with the responsibility of leading our city during this transitional period and ensuring that this city runs smoothly."
