JOHANNESBURG - Upgrades to the Rooiwal Wastewater Treatment Plant in Tshwane are advancing rapidly, with phase 1A expected to be completed three months ahead of schedule.

This phase focuses on completing the work left unfinished by the previous contractor, which is a company linked to controversial businessman Edwin Sodi.

On Thursday, Tshwane Mayor Nasiphi Moya led a tour of the facility to assess its progress.

The Development Bank of Southern Africa, which is overseeing the upgrades at the Rooiwal Wastewater Treatment Works, is almost finished with phase 1A.

This phase was originally due to be completed in April.

But Moya said it would be completed any day now.

She said phase 1B, which focuses on the actual refurbishments of the plant, would now begin in March, instead of the previously planned start date of September.

"So all in all, phase 1 will be completed by June 2026. As with 1A and 1B, the aim is to finish on time and within budget."

Phases 2 and 3 will deal with expanding the plant's capacity so that it can treat larger volumes of water.
