CAPE TOWN - The family of a man accusing a prominent Cape Town musician of sexual assault hopes that the testimony of their loved one will encourage more rape victims to speak out.
A 51-year-old jazz musician, who cannot be named to protect the identity of the victim, is accused of sexually assaulting his former student in 2013 when he was 14 years old until he was 20 years old.
The accused was arrested in 2020 and is currently out on bail.
His trial is underway at the Blue Downs Magistrates Court, where the victim's cross-examination is being held in-camera.
The victim's family spokesperson, June Major, said they want justice for their loved one.
"The victim in this particular case is now a father himself and by him sharing his story and fighting for justice for himself and for every other victim and survivor out there, is to create a safe space for his children and for other children. He wouldn't want any of his children or another child to ever experience what he experienced."
