Aubrey Modiba squashes rumours Sundowns players intentionally lost games to get Mngqithi out

Robert Marawa chats to Mamelodi Sundowns player, Aubrey ‘Postman’ Modiba.

He began his career at 19 and has gone on to play for several top teams, including SuperSport United, Bafana Bafana, and now Mamelodi Sundowns.

Despite playing professionally for almost a decade, Modiba believes he still has a lot to achieve.

This includes Sundowns’ shared goal of winning another CAF Champions League trophy.

“This is my fifth season at Sundowns, having not won the Champions League, it is something that still haunts us as players… I am still hungry for more.”
– Aubrey Modiba, Mamelodi Sundowns

Sundowns is hoping to bring home that star with newly appointed coach Miguel Cardoso, its third coach in a year.

He follows the short stint of Manqoba Mngqithi, who was sacked.

The rumour mill ran rife with speculation that players were intentionally losing games to get him out.

Modiba debunks the speculation, stating: “We are professionals”.

“We are there to work irrespective of who’s the coach. We always try and do our best… in some of the games our best was just not enough. Other teams are also doing well.”
– Aubrey Modiba, Mamelodi Sundowns

He is grateful to the team’s senior players and management, who helped with the transitions.

“We know what to do… we know what it takes to play for Sundowns so we try and adjust to the new coach, new philosophies… we take it as professionals.”
