Stephen Grootes speaks to financial advisor Warren Ingram, cofounder of Galileo Capital, about some of the best ways for people to invest money overseas.

Listen below.

Thinking of investing overseas?

With the world becoming more interconnected, investing overseas has become a viable option for those looking to make their money grow.

It's a smart move for South Africans looking to get in on global action, says Ingram.

Specifically, it offers investors the chance to diversify their portfolios, he says.

"Diversification is also about having access to companies that offer opportunities we can't get on the South African market."

Ingram says that, while the JSE tends to be dominated by banks, mining houses and insurance firms, overseas markets offer something different.

"What you won't see is a big tech platform like a Meta or an X. You also won't see a massive global biotech business that's developing medicines and then a host of other companies that are changing the way we do things... Most of those companies are listed in the UK, the US, Switzerland and right across to China."

Another benefit to global investing is access to countries with different interest rates.

"For example, being able to buy bonds in Brazil or a money market unit trust in Switzerland if you want absolute safety. There are a whole range of investments that look very different to what we can get in South Africa."

Ingram says it's no longer the case that only the very wealthy can access overseas markets.

"You can really access global investments with a monthly debit order and it could be as small as R500."

"Accessing global investments is a lot more democratised than it's ever been before."
