JOHANNESBURG - The Usindiso Commission of Inquiry probing the Marshalltown fire that killed 77 people says the Johannesburg municipality is not complying with its investigation.

The commission resumed on Wednesday after taking a few weeks break for the festive season.

Johannesburg Mayor Dada Morero is the first person to appear before it this year.

The commission is on the second part of its mandate to investigate the factors behind the prevalence of hijacked buildings in Gauteng.

However, it said it had been struggling with getting reports and information from the Johannesburg municipality officials.

The commission's head, Sisi Khampepe, said the municipality's non-compliance is hampering the investigation.

“Nate Morero, the City of Johannesburg is the lynchpin to the work of this commission. We have had several difficulties with the city in terms of them not complying with the timelines they have set. It has taken this unfortunate step that you should come and explain to us why the city has not been able to furnish us with the information we have sought,” she said.

Morero said the city requires a further four weeks to hand over all the information the commission requires.
