JOHANNESBURG - While many parents celebrate the start of the 2025 academic year, others are frustrated.
Schools have opened their doors, with education officials joining communities to mark the occasion.
In Soweto, MEC Matome Chiloane kicked off his day at Braamfischerville Primary School, where he’s expected to address parents’ concerns and challenges.
For parents like Nkateko Maluleke, the day has been far from joyous.
Arriving at 7am on Wednesday, Maluleke was ready to drop off her daughter for her first day of “big school”.
Instead, she was turned away due to electrical issues that disrupted administration.
“They didn’t capture her documents because of the electricity situation, so they said I should come back tomorrow. Because the office is not working today because of the launching things.”
With her anticipation now replaced by frustration, Maluleke hopes to address these issues directly with the MEC.
