CAPE TOWN - Western Cape Education MEC David Maynier said that more than 400 additional teaching posts had been made available to schools with a significant increase in pupils numbers.
More than 2,400 contract teacher posts have not been renewed in the province, due to shortfalls following National Treasury budget cuts.
The provincial department has employed nearly 35,000 educators this year, with more than 1.2 million pupils enrolled in public schools.
Maynier said that his department was working to complete nine new schools and 265 additional classrooms this year.
He said that through further budget reprioritisation, they'd created 477 new teacher posts for schools showing significant growth in pupil numbers and new schools.
"The allocation of these posts will be based on data confirming the number of new learners that have arrived to take up the places that they have been offered in our schools."
The MEC said it was crucial that new and existing schools had the resources required to accommodate additional learners.
