JOHANNESBURG - Proteas white-ball head coach Rob Walter named his 15-man squad to play in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 in Pakistan and the UAE from 19 February to 9 March.

Temba Bavuma will lead the side, which includes 10 players who featured at the 2023 Cricket World Cup in India.

Top order batters Tony de Zorzi, Ryan Rickelton and Tristan Stubbs, and all-rounder Wiaan Mulder have been selected for their first senior 50-over ICC tournament, while fast bowler Anrich Nortje, who missed out on the World Cup due to injury, makes his return after six months out of the national team.

“This squad boasts a wealth of experience, with many players having consistently performed in high-pressure situations. That kind of experience is invaluable in a tournament like this,” said Walter

South Africa has been drawn in Group B, with their opening fixture against Afghanistan on 21 February in Karachi. Bavuma’s side will then travel to Rawalpindi to take on Australia on 25 February, before returning to Karachi for their final group stage match against England on 01 March.

At their most recent ICC tournaments, the Proteas reached the semi-finals at the ODI World Cup two years ago and stumbled at the last hurdle, in the final, at the 2024 T20 World Cup. Walter feels they are close to winning a covet ICC tournament for the first time in 27 years.

“We’ve managed to maintain the core group of our 2023 World Cup squad, whilst adding fresh talent. Our recent performances at ICC events show that we’re capable of reaching the latter stages of global tournaments. We’re eager to take the next step and go even further in pursuit of the coveted silverware,” said Walter.
