JOHANNESBURG - The basic education minister said that the class of 2024 had shown perseverance despite starting high school during the COVID-19 pandemic. 

Minister Siviwe Gwarube was speaking at a briefing in Johannesburg on Monday ahead of the announcement of the national matric results later. 

The auditorium was buzzing with jubilation as South Africa’s top achieving matriculants were celebrated. 

The matriculants wore their uniforms with pride, showcasing their achievements through badges on their blazers.

Gwarube said that the class of 2024 had shown incredible strength by working through the global pandemic.

"Many of you began your high school journey in 2020. During the year of COVID, schools were closed, and traditional learning methods were disrupted. Some of you had to adapt to deal with limited resources and yet despite these obstacles, you persevered," said Gwarube.

She added that the future of South Africa was bright in the hands of these and other pupils.
