CAPE TOWN - With the start of the 2025 academic year fast approaching, many NPOs are gearing up to assist school children with whatever they can.

The Anna Foundation engages with non-fee-paying schools and learners from disadvantaged areas. They run after-school educational programmes as well as feeding schemes.

Anna Olivier, director of the Anna Foundation, said that despite the implementations and attempts, education was still not equal within South Africa. The challenges each school faces are different.

"I think education and schools in South Africa is most definitely not equal. So, most of the children that we work with go to rural schools, or some farm schools and for these schools, the challenges and the circumstances are very different, many children come to school tired, they've come from difficult home circumstances, they're hungry, the schools are definitely under-resourced, teachers are overworked, tired themselves."
