RANDBURG - Basic Education Minister Siviwe Gwarube has announced a historic performance from the matric class of 2024, highlighting every province has increased its pass rate.

Gwarube addressed the sector's stakeholders on Monday night in Fairlands, Johannesburg, citing that the class of 2024 achieved an overall pass rate of 87.3%, a 4.4% leap from the previous year.

2024 not only saw the highest pass rate in history but also the most bachelor passes and distinctions, standing at over 319,000.

Leading the way was KwaZulu-Natal (KZN), followed by the Western Cape and Gauteng.

KZN recorded 88,000 bachelor passes, Gauteng 66,000, and the Eastern Cape 45,000.

Basic Education Minister Gwarube praised the achievement.

"This represents a massive increase from last year, including gains in key subjects like maths."

With the ceremony wrapped up, the class of 2024 begins the next chapter of their lives.
