CAPE TOWN – African National Congress (ANC) President Cyril Ramaphosa says a national dialogue must happen to reach a new socio-political consensus for the country.

It’s believed some in the party are not in favour of a dialogue, because it’s viewed as reaffirming the partnership with the Democratic Alliance (DA), still considered to be a political opponent.

Delivering the ANC’s annual January 8 statement in Khayelitsha on Saturday, Ramaphosa said the Government of National Unity (GNU) was not a threat to the ANC’s core principles and described its formation as a tactical decision.

Reflecting on the party’s electoral setback last year, Ramaphosa said going into coalition with nine other parties has not changed his party’s character nor what it seeks to achieve.

But until it can improve its performance at the ballot box, the ANC will work with other political parties, even those with whom it has fundamental differences to deliver on its 2024 manifesto.

“The formation of the GNU is a tactical decision to pursue the national democratic revolution. The ANC’s strategic objective has not changed but we pursue this objective under conditions because we no longer have a majority.”

Ramaphosa said the national dialogue, which was originally scheduled for December and is part of the GNU’s statement of intent, must be an inclusive and transparent process.

“Progressive forces in our country have a proud tradition of engagement, collaboration, of discussion and participation and we want to see that happening.”

Ramaphosa said the ANC is determined to regain public confidence, and return as the majority government in the next elections.
